Early 20th century traveling case for an upright bass. Painted canvas over wood frame with hand sewn cushions and canvas straps. This piece is a sculptural beauty when open. Incredibly dynamic in scale....would be perfect for a musician's home or studio. This particular piece has a great story as well...
Stenciled in red paint on the exterior is 'Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo'. The company was formed in 1932 (disbanded in 1968) and originally had the name Ballet Russes de Monte-Carlo and came to be after Sergei Diaghilev (the founder of Ballets Russes) passed away. Ballets Russes was a ballet company that began in Paris and operated between 1909 and 1929. Because the company promoted ground-breaking artistic collaborations among the younger up and coming artists, Ballets Russes is widely regarded as the most influential ballet company of the 20th century.
